This massage helps to relieve pressure and discomfort caused by over constricted muscles. It aims at releasing the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep pressure on the contracted areas by either following or going across the fibers of the muscles, tendons, and fascia. With the slow deep strokes, the therapist works to lengthen the muscle fibers, restore balance, and reestablish structural and functional integrity to the greatest degree possible for the client. Deep tissue massage can sometimes be less comfortable than Swedish as the therapist works through the tender areas. Sometimes clients refer to this as a “good hurt”, but please let the practitioner know if you think that your muscles would respond better if lighter pressure is used.
As with Swedish massage the practitioner will have you fill out a health history form to help determine if there are any areas that can not be massaged.
